Small parks are generally pretty basic: a playground set in an open green area with a few paths and a fountain or two. However, this park adds a little bit more to the mix.

Ritter Park, located on the south end of Huntington, was named one of the 10 Great Public Spaces by the American Planning Association in 2012. It is a great place to spend an afternoon with friends or family.

One bridge leads to the Ritter Park Rose Garden, a stone circle surrounded by hundreds of roses. The garden and its path are decidedly medieval in design.

Between the two bridges and the flight of steps that lead to the garden, a hiking trail can be accessed.

The trail passes through a heavily wooded area with paths that range from wide to very narrow. A small stream runs though the lower trails, with a couple of short bridges along the way.

The opposite end of the trail leads to an overlook of Huntington, facing north toward the Ohio River, Marshall University, and the downtown area. Further along the open space that lies beyond is the Amphitheater, which hosts several live concerts and musical festivals throughout the warmer months.

Ritter Park also has tennis courts (which are covered in heated inflatable enclosures in the winter to facilitate year round use), a dog park, and a large playground. Adjacent to the playground is access to the stream, which is generally no more than ankle deep, depending on recent rainfall.
