West Virginia Rivers are popular destinations for fun. Whether it’s fishing, kayaking, inner tubing or swimming the state’s rivers are used all year round. When spring arrives we begin to travel around, visit new towns, explore new waterways. The state has several river towns and choosing 10 was not an easy task. Some you will know and others you may never have heard of and that makes exploring them, even more fun. Each these towns are charming in their own way and worth the trip.
Back in 2013 Fayetteville was selected as West Virginia’s best river town by Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine. Fayetteville is a whitewater hotspot and a favorite destination of kayakers and amateur rafters from all around the globe.

Hinton is a historic rail town that is nestled between the New, Greenbrier and Bluestone Rivers. It is a popular destination for fishing and kayaking. Rafting in and around Hinton is legendary.
Morgantown is a fun, creative town full of art, sports and fine dining. It rests along the Monongahela River, which is popular with locals and tourists.
Shepherdstown is the oldest town in West Virginia. It was chartered in 1762 by Colonial Virginia’s General Assembly. It is situated along the Potomac River in the breathtaking Shenandoah Valley.

Thomas is a former coal town situated on the Blackwater River. It may be a small town, but it is alive and vibrant with artisans and music. It offers antique shops, an art gallery and fine dining. Combine all of that with fishing, kayaking and swimming in the Blackwater River and Thomas is irresistible!
