While many of the most notable legends in West Virginia (think Mothman) are surrounded by dark tales and suspense, there’s a living legendary figure in The Mountain State that will surprise you in the best way possible. Even though so little is known about the creature known as the Powell’s Mountain Goat, it may be the most famous mammal around.

It lives on Powell's Mountain and has quite a following among those who regularly travel Route 19 between Summersville and Interstate 79.

It's said she used to live on a nearby farm but escaped. When she was discovered living up on this roadside perch, she was brought back to the farm (more than once), but kept escaping... always to be found here on top of Powell's Mountain. Eventually, the farmer just let her stay. (But don't worry... she has plenty of humans looking after her now... )
