The southeastern edge of West Virginia is home to Moncove Lake State Park. It was established in 1990 on 250 acres of the Moncove Lake Wildlife Management Area. Today, the park has expanded to 896 acres, and sits on the shores of Moncove Lake, underneath a flyway of hawk migration.
Moncove Lake State Park is the ideal spot for various water recreations, outdoor gatherings, and camping. The park offers 48 campsites—tents and trailers friendly, 34 of which have electrical hookups. The campground is open in spring through fall, and only available via phone, online, or in-person reservation.
Other features include an outdoor swimming pool, picnic area, and hunting on a 500-acre wildlife management area. There are also fishing, boating, birdwatching, biking, hiking opportunities, as well as seasonal kayak, paddle boat, and rowboat rentals.
The picnic areas are equipped with picnic tables, fire rings with grill surfaces, dump stations, drinking water, and restroom facilities. If you’re interested in an active trip, consider biking through the Greenbrier State Forest and enjoy 13 miles of picturesque trails.
For hiking, there are five relatively short trails available, with the longest being two miles. While hiking in the area, you'll likely see various wildlife, including whitetail deer, turkey, fox, squirrels, chipmunks, and beavers. The scenic views are also worth photographing.
As long as you have a West Virginia fishing license, there's the opportunity to catch an assortment of fish, including large mouth bass, bluegill, trout, catfish, walleye, and yellow perch. Since Moncove Lake is 144 acres, you won’t get bored anytime soon.
Hunting is restricted to a few acres of land and is open throughout the year. The wildlife you’re likely to see at Moncove Lake State Park include wild turkeys, grouse, squirrels, rabbits, ducks, geese, and whitetail deer.
