One Of The Most Beautiful Day Hikes In America Is Right Here In West Virginia
One of the best ways to enjoy West Virginia’s natural beauty is to get outdoors and hike through it! Here’s a trail that offers both history and beauty, and the view from the overlook is stunning.
The Maryland Heights Loop Trail is 6.3 miles long. It takes you on a climb of 1,633 feet to a gorgeous overlook.
You'll find the trailhead near the Harpers Ferry Visitors Area.
This trail immerses you in the beauty of the Potomac River, and you'll start by crossing the river on a footbridge.
The trail is lined with trees. It's well-marked and easy to follow.
This trail also offers some Civil War history. Along the trail you'll find what's left of the fortifications the Union soldiers built in 1862. At the summit, you'll find remains of the fort.
You'll also see some cool rock formations.
Though some of the trail is steep, other parts are relatively flat. Overalll, this hike is considered moderately challenging.
While this trail is often crowded on weekends, if you can hike it during the week you'll likely find quiet solitude.
At the overlook you'll have some breathtaking views of Harpers Ferry. Don't forget your camera!
