It will come as no surprise to most of our readers that West Virginia is full of unique historical sites. One fascinating but little known gem is the Martinsburg Roundhouse, a museum, tourist information center, and event venue in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Tucked away along the railroad tracks in Martinsburg, West Virginia, stands an iron-framed, Civil War-era roundhouse.

It is the only iron-framed roundhouse left standing in the world.
As such, the Martinsburg Roundhouse is a historical treasure, and it's definitely a must-see the next time you are in the area.

In 1866, shortly after the completion of the American Civil War, the B&O Railroad Company built this roundhouse and the shops next door. They were used by the railroad until the 1980s.
Today, the Roundhouse functions as a museum and event venue.

Public Tours are available on Saturdays during the spring, summer, and fall months. Private tours are available by appointment. Various events open to the public are hosted here throughout the year, and it can also be booked for private occasions.

Tours of the Roundhouse start at $5 for adults and $3 for children, and they are led by volunteers with a wealth of knowledge about railroad history that they are happy to share.

For a public tour, stop by on a Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. from April to October. Private tours are a bit more expensive but can be scheduled at your convenience if you contact the Roundhouse.
Or, choose to see the Roundhouse at one of the many events that are open to the public and held here every year — from Irish and wine festivals to craft shows.
