Harpers Ferry is the easternmost town in West Virginia, located on a peninsula where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers converge. This is also a place where the borders of Maryland and Virginia meet with the border of West Virginia. It’s a small town with centuries of history, making it the perfect place for a day trip.

A man named Peter Stephens first settled here in 1732. The land was then purchased by Robert Harper after whom the town was named.

In 1761, Mr. Harper instituted a ferry to cross the rivers for settlers who were moving west into the Shenandoah Valley. The town first became known as "Shenandoah Falls at Mr. Harper's Ferry" and was later renamed "Harpers Ferry."
This town is rich with American history and played significant roles in both the Civil War and the War of 1812.

During the War of 1812, Harpers Ferry gunsmiths provided arms for the military and many also joined in the fight. The oldest building in town is actually a military recruitment station for the war.
During the Civil War, a battle took place in Harpers Ferry and surrounding areas.

Originally built in 1848, abolitionist John Brown used the building during his raid in 1859. Now known as John Brown's Fort, this is the only surviving armory from the Civil War era.
First opened in 1889, this railway station is owned by Amtrak and is still in use today.
