The State Park In West Virginia With Phenomenal Hiking Trails And Even Better Views
Among the hills above the New River, you will find an overlook unlike any other at Grandview State Park. It is a popular photograph on the internet, but this park has more to offer than the view. It also has some interesting and geologically diverse terrain to enjoy.
Grandview State park is located along the New River Gorge National River, offering spectacular views and a six-mile network of diverse hiking trails.
When you first arrive, a short hike from the parking lot will lead to the main overlook. You'll be greeted by a view of the New River winding its way around a wooded ridge line bordered by train tracks. From here, it is not hard to determine how this park got its name.
Further exploration leads to trails with interesting geological features. Exposed rock juts out from certain areas along the way; some small, others rising high like natural fortresses.
These views are all connected by a trail system that features towering rock faces, tunnels and overhangs under the cool shade of the forest. You will also have the opportunity to view local wildlife, such as foxes, turkey, deer, bats, skinks, and box turtles. Be sure to keep an an out out for several species of birds as well, including raptors, song birds and ravens.
