He was raised by an uncle on Jackson's Mill in Jackson Mill, West Virginia, who instilled in him a strong work ethic and a love for learning. Jackson excelled in his studies and became a teacher at the young age of 18.

He was raised as a Presbyterian and attended church regularly, even teaching Sunday school. He also attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, and became a professor there after the Civil War began.

However, his success on the battlefield earned him the nickname "Stonewall," which was given to him during the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. Jackson became one of the most distinguished and revered Confederate generals of the Civil War. His life was tragically cut short when he was accidentally shot by his own troops at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863.
