The Boardwalk Hike In West Virginia That Leads To Incredibly Scenic Views
When you hear the word “boardwalk” many people immediately start thinking about oceanside pathways that have plenty of coastal breezes and waterfront views. Not in West Virginia! Our most enchanting boardwalk trail leads right through the center of a forest and it couldn’t be more magical! When you’re itching to take a hike that has scenery from one end to the other, head to the Beartown Boardwalk and lose yourself in another world.
When first encountering Beartown Boardwalk you might think you've stepped into a magical world that exists only in your imagination. But Beartown State Park is real and you can visit it on the eastern summit of Droop Mountain.
Beartown State Park is filled with boulders, unusual rock formations, crevices, and overhanging cliffs. Named for the many cave-like openings in the rocks, nearby residents believe this spot holds the perfect winter dens for the area's black bears.
The 1/2-mile boardwalk will take you on a twisting, winding journey through the forest. The multi-level pathway has many stairs and leads through the virtually untouched landscape.
Travel between the towering boulders that were once just a single huge rock formation. The boardwalk was built between the cracks and crevices to give you a view of the interesting geology of the area.
The plant growth is also other-worldly. You'll feel as if you're tiptoeing through a jungle under the canopy alongside moss-covered rocks, ferns, and soaring trees.
Beartown State Park is open from April - October, and off-season by appointment. For more information, visit the West Virginia State Parks website. Address: Beartown Road, Renick, WV 24966.
