The corn maze is a West Virginia tradition in many places every year. Its unclear how this tradition started, but since corn is also called maize, somebody saw the similarity to the word maze, which probably sparked the idea. So, when this time of year rolls around, the corn is cut, and the fun begins. This has been a tradition at Cooper Family Farms for 18 years.
The plot of land on which the Cooper Family Farm sits has been a working farm in Milton since the 1840s. Once only 100 acres of land, the farm is now 700 acres, farming hay, corn, tobacco, timber, and beef.
The corn maze is an elaborate winding path through the corn, sometimes designed in specific words. patterns or drawing. Other times, the maze is a random pattern thorough which kids and adults can wander, seeking a way out.
The chosen pattern for the 2018 corn maze, which opens to the public on Saturday, September 8, depicts the word family next to a large tree bordered by a basic grid pattern. As always, the large maze is cut into the farm's 8-acre corn field.
But there is more to the farm's agricenter that just a corn maze - there is also a tower on the farm's pumpkin patch for ziplining. If you really want to see the maze pattern for yourself, the zipline soars right over the corn maze, so you can get a bird's eye view of the unique pattern.
Other activities at the farm include the corn crawl crib, in which younger children try navigating through the crib to find the slide at the end. In the pumpkin patch, you can search the field to find the prefect pumpkin for your family. And as night sets in, enjoy a roaring campfire and cook your own Smores.
Also, when October rolls around, the corn maze shifts into the Halloween season to become a haunted maze, aptly called Field of Screams. It will be open four nights in 2018: October 19, 20, 26, and 27.
