We’re lucky that Washington is a coastal state — but realistically, we can’t always make it to the ocean at a moment’s notice. Our beautiful lakes are much more accessible to most of us, and it’s almost time for another sunny season of fishing, boating, and lakeside lounging.

We chose these lakes for this weekend road trip because they’re somewhat centrally located, and the trip could easily be reversed depending on your starting point. Either way, you’ll be enjoying some of Washingtonians’ favorite bodies of water.

1. Start your adventure at Lake Wenatchee.

Go for a refreshing swim and have a picnic lunch at Lake Wenatchee State Park, 489-acre camping park with 12,623 feet of waterfront, including a great swimming beach.
2. Next, make the 2 1/2 hour drive to Lake Chelan.

This is one of our most popular vacation destinations for a reason -- it's gorgeous. Just make sure you catch the inevitably gorgeous sunset.
There's always a lot happening at Lake Chelan, so give yourself plenty of time to explore.

From bike tours to wine tours to the Lady of the Lake cruise, there's truly something for everyone.
3. Next up is Alta Lake, the centerpiece of the Alta Lake State Park.

The lake itself is lovely, but it's the surrounding scenery that makes it spectacular.

4. Last but not least, head to Omak Lake, the longest natural lake in Okanogan County.
