Salmon Sighting Is One Of The Most Incredible Natural Phenomena In Washington, And Here’s How You Can Do It
One of the best parts about living in Washington is the opportunity to appreciate the abundance of wildlife. And this time of year is especially exciting in the Evergreen State for those who wish to participate in the annual salmon sighting season. Thanks to the NSEA’s Salmon Discovery Program, there are several events throughout November where you can watch the incredible phenomenon of salmon swimming upstream in Whatcom County. Each viewing event will include discussions with naturalists, unforgettable viewing opportunities, games, entertainment, and more. Here’s more on what makes salmon sighting season one of the most memorable and important events.
Salmon sighting season is a cherished event in Whatcom County, and this time of year, NSEA invites you to participate in celebrating one of the state's most beloved species.
The Nooksack River is just one of two rivers in the state of Washington that supports runs of all five species of Pacific salmon: Chinook, Chum, Coho, Pink, and Sockeye.
Many folks don't realize that it's actually possible to spot salmon year-round! Check out this handy chart to learn about the spawning season of each different kind of salmon.
Throughout the month of November, NSEA Naturalists will be leading eight events that correspond with the final stretch of the salmon's journey upstream.
Participants will learn invaluable information about the salmon's journey, such as the different habitats that the fish rely on and how we can protect them.
In fact, since 1991, NSEA has helped restore over 50 miles of upstream habitat for young fish and spawning adults. How incredible is that?
So whether you're a wildlife enthusiast or simply are passionate about Washington's unique landscape, you'll be impressed by all that these salmon sighting events have to offer.
