Some Of The Most Breathtaking Views In America Can Be Found Right Here In Washington
With its panoramic mountain views, forested islands and coastal landscape, the state of Washington could easily be defined by its natural beauty alone. In fact, these Pacific Northwest lands are considered some of the most beautiful in the entire country. One area in particular, known as Dog Mountain, provides true natural wonder in a way that only Washington can.

When it comes to scenery in Washington, it doesn’t get much more picturesque than the view from Dog Mountain. Located in the Colombia River Gorge, this peak boasts views of Mount Hood and the Mount Saint Helens volcano, with nearby wildflowers providing bursts of color.

Rising on the north side of the Columbia River Gorge, Dog Mountain stands at 2,948 feet. The base of the peak can be found in Skamania County, just along State Route 14. In such a scenic portion of the state, it’s no wonder why Dog Mountain is so beloved among hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

If you’re looking for the full, immersive experience of Dog Mountain, the seven-mile loop is your answer. Taking just under six hours, this trek gains nearly 3,000 feet in elevation and is not for the faint of heart. Fortunately, there are also modifications of the trail for those pressed for time.

Trails meander through beautiful meadows, wildflowers, breathtaking vistas and even the site of a former fire lookout. After the first .8 miles, the trail splits into two separate paths which will then meet at the summit. The fire lookout was constructed in 1931 as a strategic point for spotting wildfires in Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon. By 1967, the site was replaced by more advanced technology.

It’s fortunate that the trail is accessible all year round, because the scenery is exquisite in each season, as evident by these photographs. Whether you have just a few hours to spend here or a whole afternoon, it’s a trip that won’t be forgotten soon.
