There Are More Stairs Than There Are Miles Along This Beautiful Hiking Trail In Washington
Washington State is full of wonderful hiking trails to explore. Whether you enjoy a challenging hike through Alpine trails surrounded by wildflowers, or a relaxing stroll through a wildlife refuge, the Evergreen State has plenty of options to get outside and enjoy nature. Manchester State Park in Port Orchard features a short scenic hiking loop through the forest, and if you’re up for a bit of a challenge, you’re in luck. You’ll hike more stairs than miles along this Washington trail.

The Manchester State Park loop is a relatively short hike at 1.9 miles, but its elevation gains make it a moderately challenging route that typically takes just under an hour to complete.

Before you head out, be sure to have all the supplies you'll need.
Washington weather can change quickly, so it's important to pack accordingly. Always have an ample supply of water and be sure to pack your camera to capture the beauty of the area. The family dog is welcome to join you but must be on a leash at all times.
Wander through a canopy of trees and breathe in the earthy smell as the well-maintained trail winds gently through the forest.
Long before it was a state park, Manchester was known as Middle Point, a fort used to protect the Bremerton shipyards during World War ll. Staircases lead to dark and rather creepy abandoned ammunition rooms. These days, you can explore the remaining buildings and even rent the brick torpedo warehouse for weddings and special events.
Although much of the trail is wooded, there are some beautiful cliffside viewpoints where you can catch a glimpse of playful seals or watch a ferry sailing through Rich Passage.
Probably the most challenging part of the loop is the staircase, a steep climb up several dozen stairs. You'll actually hike more stairs than miles on this trail. That said, there is a bench at the top for those who need to take a break. The staircase can certainly be a challenge, but the views are well worth the exertion.
After a scenic tromp through the woods, the tranquil water awaits - a welcome respite after the hike.
Manchester State Park is open year-round for day use and camping. A current Discover Pass is required and can be purchased on the Washington State Parks website.
