10 Foolproof Ways To Make Someone From Washington Cringe
The vast majority of born-and-raised Washingtonians embody the laid back vibe that the West Coast is known for. Of course, that doesn’t mean we never get upset. And while we all have our different pain points, there are a few things that are practically guaranteed to make us cringe. So if you’d like to avoid that, try to avoid the following:
1. When we tell you we're from Washington, say, "Oh, you're from Seattle?"
Seattle may be our biggest city, but the vast majority of us live elsewhere. For some of us, Seattle is a 7 hour drive from home.
2. Ask us about Super Bowl XLIX...
... we were so close. Sigh.
3. ... or the SoDo arena.
We really miss the Seattle Supersonics.
4. Ask us if it ever stops raining.
Have you even heard of Eastern Washington? Also, do you ask people who grew up in the dozens of places that see much more annual rainfall than Western Washington that question?
5. Ask us if we've ever seen Bigfoot.
Admittedly, we may not cringe at this one... we might have a story for you.
6. Make weed jokes.
Yes, it's legal here. Yes, some of us smoke it. No, not all of us do (not even close). The "Washingstonian" pun was funny in 2012, but it has run its course.
7. Tell us our beer and wine are overrated.
Washington is internationally known for their wine and beer industries - and our hops are used to make beer all over the Northwest. If anything, they're underrated.
8. Ask us about Twilight or 50 Shades.
The city of Forks has made a lot of money off Twilight tourists, but it's really just a tiny logging community with no vampires to be found.
9. Talk politics in public when you're with people you don't know.
There are a lot of assumptions about the political beliefs of Washingtonians based on which part of the state they call home. The truth is, there are conservatives, liberals and moderates all over the state, and being this bold could get you into a heated argument with someone you've never met.
10. Call it "Pike's Place."
Even some Washingtonians are guilty of this. It is Pike Place Market.
Although we have our cringe-worthy moments, we can still laugh at ourselves. Here are some
Washington jokes that are pretty funny.
