The hotel is named after Jacob Weinhard, who came to Dayton in 1880 after an apprenticeship with his uncle, Henry Weinhard at the Weinhard Brewery in Portland.

Jacob constructed the building in 1890 as a home for the Lodge Hall & Saloon. The building changed hands (and names) several times before becoming the Weinhard Hotel in 1994.
