Here’s Virginia’s Top Outdoor Attraction… And You’ll Definitely Want To Do It
Virginia’s top outdoor attraction is one that appeals to all ages and all senses. Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens is more than just 50 acres of enchanting gardens – it’s a site of guided tours, educational programs, musical performances, and interactive exhibits. Perhaps the best part about a trip to Lewis Ginter is that each visit will be a unique one. And with such beautiful weather, there’s no better time to see what’s blooming.
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is located on Lakeside Avenue, in Richmond's North Side. The land now used as the garden was once hunting ground used by Native Americans. In 1884, a Major by the name of Lewis Ginter purchased 10 acres of the land. Ginter was inspired by exquisite gardens he had visited in Australia, and wanted to create the same environment in Virginia. Over the course of its history, the garden has evolved and expanded, all the while maintaining Ginter's original vision.
Today, visitors can explore acres and acres of pristine gardens. One of the trademark features of the property is the dome-shaped classical conservatory, which is the only one of its kind on the East coast.
There are endless exhibits to explore at Lewis Ginter, and they frequently change too. Photographed above is a butterfly sculpture made entirely out of Legos by artist Sean Kenney.
And speaking of butterflies, the ButterflyLive exhibit just opened, which allows visitors to walk into an indoor butterfly room filled with beautiful plants, flowers, and hundreds of these magical winged creatures.
Hungry for a little snack? The Tea House is a perfect place to stop and relax for a bit. In addition to herbal teas, the cafe serves soup, salad, sandwiches, and other treats fit for this beautiful garden setting. The cafe is open every day from 10 AM - 4 PM, and lunch is served from 11 AM - 3 PM.
There are few things more relaxing and meditative than walking around a beautiful garden. The diverse landscapes of Lewis Ginter are what make this garden such a frequently-visited spot.
Anyone interested in expanding their understanding of plants and flowers can enroll in classes. These classes range from garden settings to yoga practices and lunchtime lectures.
It's no wonder why Lewis Ginter is such a frequented spot, and even a popular place for weddings. There's something truly extraordinary about spending time in such a natural haven.
