Near the borders of North Carolina and Tennessee awaits a treasure trove of natural beauty. The Mount Rogers Recreation Area is vast, encompassing approximately 200,000 acres. Within this rugged expanse of wilderness — and in some cases, just bordering it — you’ll find all four of the tallest peaks in Virginia. Whether you’re looking for an epic hiking adventure, a camping trip, or perhaps a picnic with a view, you’ll be glad you paid a visit to the Mount Rogers Recreation Area in Virginia. Mount Rogers holds the title of the tallest mountain in Virginia. It's the crown jewel of the namesake Mount Rogers Recreation Area, and it makes for a worthy adventure. But, if you plan on hiking to the top, you should know that it's no easy feat. The route takes hikers an average of six hours to complete, totaling 12 miles there and back. Despite being the tallest natural point in the state, the peak is located within a forest, so you won't necessarily get the staggering mountain views you might imagine. On your ascent, however, you'll see plenty of views. In fact, you'll even hike right over some of the other peaks on this list!
Whitetop Mountain marks the beginning (or end) of the famous Virginia Creeper Trail. What sets Whitetop Mountain apart is that it's actually possible to drive to the top of it! Driving the highest road in Virginia is quite an adrenaline rush, and the views from the top will not disappoint.
Next up on the list of mountains accessible in or near the Mount Rogers Recreation Area is Wilburn Ridge, also known as Pine Mountain. The best way to reach this stunning vista is via Grayson Highlands State Park at Massie's Gap. The hike typically takes about two hours to complete, and along the way, you'll enjoy stunning vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Plus, hiking this trail is a great way to see the famous wild ponies of Grayson Highlands!
Last but not least, Buzzard Rock comes in at just over 5,000 feet above sea level. If you've completed Whitetop Mountain, then you've actually hiked right over Buzzard Rock! With exceptional views, it makes an excellent picnic spot.
