Virginia is no stranger to urban legends. Between the state’s lengthy and troubling history and tales that have been passed on for generations, there are plenty of stories that will keep you up at night. This notorious urban legend in Virginia involves the ghosts of two little girls. Continue reading to learn more about the troubling history surrounding this landmark…if you dare!
There's no denying that former railroad tunnels carry a certain haunted nature to them. And the one you'll find in Rockbridge County, which was formerly part of a historic railway line, is certainly no exception.
In the 1800s, the Poor House Road Tunnel was known as the B&O Tunnel. The former railway connected the towns of Lexington and Staunton. Today, the tunnel is decidedly off-the-beaten-path, seemingly in the middle of the woods on a street bearing the same name.
The moment you set eyes upon the tunnel, you'll notice the overgrown tree limbs and the graffiti that now cover its stone walls. Adding to the abandoned feeling is a small creek that runs next to the tunnel, creating a haunting echo.
According to countless urban legends surrounding the tunnel, the ghosts of two little girls inhabit the passageway. In fact, you might even hear them whispering "come on, come on," as they urge you to come closer.
No one knows the identity of these girls, but it's believed that they were tragically killed nearby.
Others who have visited the tunnel at night report the overwhelming feeling of needing to leave, as though they are unwelcome there. You might even find that any photos you take develop in strange ways.
Whether or not the tunnel is legitimately haunted, there's no denying the fact that it's considered to be one of the most haunted landmarks in Virginia.
