It might seem like a stretch at first: the idea of a carwash< em>and a restaurant. But this charming establishment in Kilmarnock is nothing to scoff at. See why the Car Wash Cafe is considered a local favorite. Let’s just say you’ll be leaving with a clean car and a clean plate.
Located in the historic and quaint river town of Kilmarnock, the Car Wash Cafe is one of the most unique dining spots in the entire state. It might look like a car wash that just happens to serve food, but the food here is actually the main attraction. The kitchen uses local seafood, produce, and incredible seasonings to make your breakfast or lunch an unforgettable experience.
In 2015, this spot was voted by Virginia Living as Best Place For Lunch in the Eastern region. It's open for breakfast and lunch 7 days a week, from 8:00 AM - 2:30 PM (2:00 PM on Sundays).
Inside, you'll find a cafe that's clean, cozy, and has an inviting atmosphere. The friendly staff will be eager to meet any guests that are passing through. There's also no wall between the dining space and the kitchen, so you'll be able to see all the action as your food is prepared.
There's just nothing like the variety of homemade plates you'll find at Car Wash Cafe. Photographed above is the classic Huevos Rancheros, accompanied by all the delicious fixings.
By far, one of the most popular breakfast plates here is the eggs Benedict accompanied by lump crabcakes and homemade grits. If you're looking for the full Car Wash experience, this dish is a MUST.
As mentioned before, lunch fare here is equally impressive. Ranging from salads, soups, and sandwiches, the cafe has just about any lunch item you could hope for -- and then some. Of course, the menu is on the smaller side, but the quality won't be rivaled. Here we have the Crab Louie salad made with authentic freshly caught crab.
Another popular lunch item is the lightly seared Ahi tuna sandwich with a side of mouthwatering sweet potato fries.
And while the seafood may be to die for, sometimes there's just no substitute for a perfectly grilled burger. Fortunately, they've got that covered too.
So if you find yourself in the neighborhood, or are willing to make the beautiful drive out to Kilmarnock, you won't want to miss this local gem. There might be a bit of a wait, but it'll all be worth it. Especially considering the fact that your newly-cleaned car can be waiting for you when you are ready to head out.
