The Chapel In Virginia That’s Located In The Most Unforgettable Setting
There’s something about a chapel that evokes a sense of reverence and beauty, no matter which religious associations it may have. That’s especially true when the structure happens to reside in the beautiful Virginia countryside. Tucked away in the Shenandoah Valley is one of the most picturesque chapels in the state. Since its construction in 1867, Lee Chapel has remained an iconic part of the landscape, for both its impeccable architecture and significant history. Upon visiting this site, you’ll find that the natural beauty of the setting combined with the building’s structure is simply unforgettable.
The establishment of Lee Chapel took place under the request of Robert E. Lee who served as the President of the University where the campus as located. What today is known as Washington and Lee was Washington College at the time of the construction, 1867-1868. (Photographed immediately above is the Chapel as it appeared in the 1800s.)
The building immediately stands out for its beautiful Victorian brick architecture, which complements perfectly the iconic buildings of the University’s nearby colonnade. The building was most likely designed by Lee’s son, George Washington Custis Lee. Less than 100 yards from Lee Chapel is Grace Episcopal Church, where the family attended church services.
When Lee passed away in 1870, it was decided that he would be buried beneath the chapel, which now also serves as a museum. Inside the chapel is a statue known as the “Recumbent Lee” which was designed by Edward Valentine. This along with the burial site makes the scenic chapel a noteworthy Lexington attraction and an important historical landmark.
Just outside the Chapel is also the burial site of Lee’s beloved horse, Traveller. It’s not unusual for visitors and students alike to leave pennies and apples to show respect and also as a token of good luck.
In 1963, Lee Chapel was officially listed as a National Historic Landmark. While its history is certainly an integral part of the allure, there’s also no denying that the building itself is simply beautiful. No matter the season, Lee Chapel stands out as a remarkable part of the Lexington landscape. It’s hard to say whether it’s the contrast of the red brick against the sky or the notion that the mountains are nearby, but the vision of Lee Chapel is nothing short of transcendent.
