Spring may seem faraway, but there’s no harm in planning ahead of time. Once green has returned to our state, we’ll all feel antsy to get outdoors and soak up the sun. And while there’s no shortage of outdoor activities in Virginia, there’s one small town that seems to have more than its fair share and we couldn’t be happier. The town of Luray, made popular for the Luray Caverns, is a treasure trove of aboveground attractions too. Take a look at all the activity that awaits in this small mountain town.

With such proximity to Shenandoah National Park, there are countless outdoor opportunities in Luray's very own backyard. Stoney Man Mountain overlook, approximately 15 miles outside of town, is the perfect introduction to Shenandoah. Whether you're motivated to take the two-hour hike or simply enjoy the view, you'll be happy to visited this natural gem. Location: Milemarker 39.1 along Skyline Drive.
Those who love the great outdoors but don't necessarily feel compelled for an adventure will love the tranquillity of the Hawksbill Greenway. Located in town, this beautiful natural area has plenty of walking trails, picnic benches, and other amenities for the whole family. The Greenway runs alongside the Hawksbill Creek, which is also parallel to South Hawksbill Street.
Outdoor enthusiasts of all age are sure to get a big thrill out of this zip line park near Luray. Soaring over the forest floor, this zip line is equal parts exhilarating and scenic. There are also obstacle courses set up for an additional challenge. Location:

The iconic Shenandoah River lends itself to all sorts of outdoor activities and adventures. Whether you're looking for a kayak trip, canoe trip, or scenic spot for a picnic, there's no wrong way to enjoy this gorgeous river. First-time kayakers can get their hang of the sport by visiting the Shenandoah River Outfitters, which is located at 6502 S. Page Valley Road, Luray, VA 22835.
No trip to Luray is complete without a trek underground to see some of the most magnificent caverns on the East Coast. Luray Caverns offers an opportunity to see exquisite rock formations and learn about the unique history of this site.
