The Little Rocky Road Trail begins on the James River Foot Bridge. Measuring 623 feet, it's the longest pedestrian-only bridge along the entire Appalachian Trail.
What makes this hike so spectacular and rewarding is the fact that if you do make it to the first overlook, you'll be able to see just how far you've come.
The remaining few miles of the hike are quite strenuous, involving switchbacks and some rock scrambles. All accounts indicate that the views are absolutely worth the effort, although there's no shame in turning around as soon as you're ready to.
So the next time you're craving a multi-hour adventure, you can start at the iconic James River Bridge and see where the day takes you. Just don't forget to pack water, food, and the essentials!
