The Sinister Story Behind This Popular Virginia Lake Will Give You Chills

As one of the most historic states in the country, Virginia has not surprisingly accumulated its fair share of haunted tales. While most ghost stories revolve around buildings, plantations, and hospitals, there’s one rather popular natural attraction with an eerie story. Lake Drummond near Suffolk, Virginia is considered to be one of the most haunted spots in the state. For those brave enough to visit, the natural beauty of this unique site is worth the trip alone.

Located in the center of the Great Dismal Swamp is Lake Drummond, one of only two freshwater lakes in the entire state.

Scientists believe the larger Dismal Swamp area was created during the last major tectonic plate shift.
While the area is certainly beautiful, there's no denying the otherworldy -- almost haunted -- feel amidst the ancient cypress trees and marshlands.

It seems fitting, then, that Lake Drummond be the site of one of Virginia's most haunting tales.
Locals are all too familiar with the "Phantom Lovers of Drummond Lake," and many believe it to be based on a true story.

According to legend, there was once a Native American man whose bride died suddenly before the wedding. Crazed with grief, the man began searching for her and eventually became lost in the foggy waters of the Great Dismal Swamp.
One night, the groom swore he saw his bride's lantern light off in the distance. He built a small raft and headed for her immediately.

Unfortunately, the raft fell apart and the man was left to drown in the waters of Lake Drummond. According to legend, those walking near the lake at night can see the ghostly bride and groom floating together on this eerie lake.
Whether or not you happen to spot these famous ghosts, a trip to Lake Drummond and the Great Dismal Swamp is certainly worthwhile.
