Nothing says fall like a gorgeous hike through the Virginia landscape. Or in the case of High Bridge State Park, over the landscape. While this area just outside of Farmville is gorgeous in all seasons, no one can disagree that it’s simply magical in autumn. And if you’ve yet to experience this transformation, you owe it to yourself to make the trip to Virginia’s most famous bridge hike this season.
Take a peek at what’s in store:
High Bridge Trail State Park is tucked away in Central Virginia and centers on the converted Norfolk Southern Rail Line that once spanned the Potomac River.
The trail, which is wide, level, and virtually flat, is suited for all sorts of recreational activity.
Completed in 2012, High Bridge Trail is a relatively new Virginia State Park and has been embraced by outdoor enthusiasts near and far over the past five years.
While the state park is new, its history is quite impressive. High Bridge Trail State Park was once the site of one of the final Civil War Battles on April 6th and 7th of 1865.
The centerpiece of this 31-mile multi-use trail is the iconic High Bridge, which spans 2,4000 feet across the river at 160 feet high.
Be sure to pack an extra jacket, as there are sure to be some chilly winds at this elevated height! Also bring a water bottle since High Bridge State Park does not have any public drinking fountains.
Can you imagine a more picture-perfect fall excursion for the whole family?
