Virginia’s Hidden Boardwalk Hike Will Take You Miles Away From It All This Summer
Virginia’s extensive trail system offers countless ways to experience our beautiful state. Whether you’re in the mood for a shady trail through the forest, a mountain scramble, or a stroll along the shore, there are options for just about every kind of hiker. While the summer’s still here, you may want to opt for a trip to Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, where you can meander along a hidden boardwalk trail.
Check it out:
Located adjacent to False Cape State Park, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is located at 4005 Sandpiper Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23456.
The 4,500-acre refuge was established in 1938 as a vital place for migratory birds to rest and gather food.
This pristine area, along with False Cape, remains one of the last undeveloped natural areas along the East Coast. For that reason, it's a breathtaking place to explore.
Hikers and nature lovers alike can embark on a unique boardwalk hike that meanders through marshes, sand dunes, and the beach.
Known as the Dunes and Seaside Trail, this two mile loop is the perfect introduction to Back Bay's unique ecosystem.
The trail leads directly to the beach, yet hikers are advised to stay on the trail to ensure the sand dunes and fragile ecosystem are protected.
Along the way, you'll want to be on the lookout for unique wildlife.
Be sure to stop by the wildlife viewing center to learn more information about spotting the unique creatures of Back Bay.
Interior trails at Back Bay also provide access to False Cape State Park. Strolling along these peaceful boardwalks, you'll feel miles away from it all.
As you meander along the unique landscape of this area, be sure to take in all that nature has to offer.
After you've finished hiking, you can relax at one of the area's many overlooks for one last incredible view of the Bay.
