Tucked away in Patrick County, Virginia, you’ll find one of the six original Virginia State Parks. Its name, Fairy Stone, immediately conjures up mythical imagery of a fairy-tale like setting. The famous "fairy stones" are composed of the unique mineral staurolite and were created along with the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. The stones can be collected from the ground, but visitors are not allowed to dig for them.
