This year’s Christmas Town road trip begins in the beautiful town of Charlottesville. Noted for its University, this small town also buzzes with the spirit of the holidays each year. It’s especially noticeable in places like the downtown mall, decorated with lights and featuring all kinds of Christmas accessories amidst its local shops.
Traveling to Fredericksburg in December is nothing short of a magical experience. Nowhere is Virginia hospitality more alive than this small town in northern Virginia. In addition to a fascinating history, Fredericksburg also boasts some beautiful accommodations and fantastic restaurants, such as FoodE and Bistro Bethem.
Step back in time with a trip to Alexandria this season. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by the greenery-decorated storefronts and 18th century pubs to cozy up in. To stretch your legs a bit, be sure to take a stroll along the iconic King Street, which is especially picturesque this time of year.
Each year, hundreds of Virginians and out-of-towners flock to Middleburg to witness its one-of-a-kind Christmas parade featuring both people and animals. This year’s festival has come and gone, but the spirit is still alive and well along the historic streets. Candles in windows, decorated trees, and beautiful sightseeing all await you in the heart of Shenandoah.
At the very tip of Virginia lies one of the most charming towns in the entire state. Usually known for its famous Apple Blossom Festival, Winchester is equally charming come Christmas time. It’s something of an artistic hub, so don’t be surprised to find plenty of Christmas music, plays, and other festive events going on.
The beautiful streets and scenery of Harrisonburg make for a perfect getaway destination, even if you just happen to be driving through for a few hours. Being the first Culinary District in Virginia, this town makes for a convenient place to sit down to a locally prepared holiday meal.
Last but certainly not least, our trip concludes in the charming town of Staunton. The first Virginian town to become designated as a "Great American Main Street," this historic town is bustling with Christmas spirit, too. Staunton’s unique streets and architecture become all the more spectacular under the glow of Christmas lights. And with nine bed & breakfasts, you won’t worry about having to find a place to stay the night.
As you well know, these seven places just barely scratch the surface of all of Virginia’s charming Christmas Towns. Unfortunately, we couldn’t include them all in one road trip, but we’d love to hear about some of your favorite spots to visit this time of year. Looking for more holiday-inspired road trips?
