Visit the historic Old Town Alexandria and you’ll find a prime example: Christ Church. This place of worship was constructed in 1773, three years prior to the Declaration of Independence. Tucked away in the historic district of Old Town Alexandria awaits a national treasure known as Christ Church.
This landmark dates back to the days before the United States was recognized as an independent country, and thus it holds an immense amount of history.
When the church was constructed in the mid-eighteenth century, it was built as part of the Church of England's Fairfax Parish.
Construction of the church was financed by collecting 31,186 pounds of Oronoco tobacco from parishioners. The building process began in 1765 and would open for services in 1773.

Throughout its existence, the church has witnessed extraordinary history, both within and outside of its walls.
The church was known as Fairfax Church until 1816 when it was renamed.
In fact, George Washington is known to have regularly attended church services here. Step inside the church and you can still see the pew where he and his family worshipped.
