This Charming Town In Virginia Is Perfect For A Summer Day Trip
Summers in Virginia are marked by longer days, relaxing evenings, and more time to spend with loved ones. Certainly these things can be experienced at home, but there’s something special about a summer road trip. And we’ve found a great destination for you.
Cape Charles combines the best of both Eastern Shore worlds: the beach, and the Bay. It’s got small town charm but plenty of city and commercial conveniences. In terms of your next summer day trip destination, it really doesn’t get much better than this vibrant little beach town. Here’s why:

The history of Cape Charles began in 1884, when demand for railroads and ferries in the area led to the planning of a commercial city on the Eastern Shore. For years, Cape Charles served as a terminal for the Little Creek-Cape Charles Ferry, providing ferry access to Norfolk and Hampton.

Cape Charles has one of two public beaches on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and it's beautiful.

The Kiptopeke State Park beach is not one to be missed. The area was explored in 1608 by Captain John Smith himself. Today, visitors can enjoy strolling along the beach and even staying overnight in a designated campground. This spot is the perfect combination of shoreline and woods.

Restaurants such as the Shanty alone are worth making the drive. Fresh seafood, such as this jumbo crab cake, can be enjoyed while peering out across the gorgeous Bay waters.

For water bugs and land explorers alike, there are plenty of activities to get lost in. Spas, boat tours, eco tours, and more. There are even horseback riding tours, which could make for a memorable family outing.

Deemed a "Wetland of International Importance," the Eastern Shore's National Wildlife Refuge can be accessed through Cape Charles. It's an especially important area for birds in North America. In the fall, songbirds and butterflies alike will migrate south by means of the refuge. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails throughout this breathtaking area.

No long day of exploring Cape Charles is complete without a visit to Brown Dog Ice Cream.

And with any luck, maybe you'll catch a breaktaking moonrise as you take the scenic route over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
Isn’t Cape Charles stunning? If you’ve made the trip recently, or happen to be lucky enough to call this place your home, we’d love to hear about your experiences!
