16 Amazing Things People In Virginia Just Can’t Live Without
It’s not hard to live in Virginia. And I’m saying that even with a snowstorm on the horizon. We pretty much have it all here in the Old Dominion. We have history and culture. We have mountains and beaches. We have all four seasons and nature that highlights them each to perfection. Really, what’s not to love?
The following list takes a look at some of the things that make Virginia so special. These are the things that we hold near and dear…some silly, some serious, but all part of what makes our home state so incredible.
1. A beautiful sunrise…
Like this one over Thorofare Mountain along the Skyline Drive.
2. And a breathtaking sunset.
There doesn’t seem to be a bad vantage point for either in this amazing state of ours.
3. Our “saltwater delicacies.”
Blue crabs from the Chesapeake Bay? Salty, fresh oysters from the Eastern Shore? These are staple in many a Virginian’s diet…with good reason.
4. The mountains.
Sure, you can put a Virginian other places, and they might even be happy there…but nothing will ever replace the sight of the beautiful mountains of home.
5. Our beaches, rivers and lakes.
If the human body is made up of 65% water, then a Virginian’s soul is closer to 100% water. There’s just something about our oceans, rivers and lakes that feels like home.
6. Winter boots and flip-flops…often side-by-side.
With our crazy back and forth seasons (I’m looking at you, Spring and Fall), it can be difficult to know how to dress sometimes. That’s why you’ll see what might seem like incompatible footwear sitting next to each other in most Virginians' closet.
Not only was Chapstick invented in Lynchburg, but any Virginian can tell you that a tube of this magic elixir is the perfect thing to have handy on the beach, on a hike or when those winter winds start getting crazy…and they do get crazy.
8. Our amazing cities.
Full of history, culture and with a style all their own, Virginia’s cities are one-of-a-kind.
9. And our charming small towns.
With so many to choose from, it’s hard to have a favorite. But because so many Virginians grew up in small towns and villages throughout the state, we know how to appreciate all that they offer.
10. Music – from the mountains and beyond.
From the country and bluegrass roots of Southwest Virginia to the booming music scene in Richmond to the breeding ground of musical stardom in Hampton Roads, Virginia makes music right left and center.
11. “Your” team or school.
We don’t have our own professional football team here in Virginia, but that doesn’t stop us from adopting others’ with gusto. And when it comes to school pride? Virginians go ALL out to support their team.
12. Incredible history.
We may take it for granted, but try living somewhere that doesn’t have the same emphasis on history or amazing material to draw from, and trust me, you’ll miss it.
13. Road construction…oh, wait.
I guess that’s not so much something that we CAN’T live without as something that we DON’T live without. Oh well!
14. Our amazing farms…and the farmers who keep them going.
Agriculture is the top industry in Virginia – and that’s something to be proud of. So whether you support your local farmer’s market, always try to buy local produce, honey, and meats or just appreciate the work that goes into these amazing institutions, you know that Virginia farms are important, not just to Virginians, but to the nation.
It’s one of the first things people think of when they think of food from good ol’ Virginia. From ham biscuits to ham steaks with red-eye gravy, we do ham right.
16. State pride.
From flags to t-shirts to bumper stickers galore…Virginia pride shines bright everywhere you turn. Virginia IS for lovers and that’s a fact that every Virginian can be proud of!
