The Virginia Creeper Trail is one of southwestern Virginia's most iconic attractions. This former railway route runs for 34 miles and connects the towns of Abingdon and Whitetop Station.
The Virginia Creeper Trail is named in honor of the vine that grows near to it, the Virginia Creeper, as well as the nickname for the train that once chugged along its mountainous route.
After many railroads were abandoned in the 1970s, a coalition of citizens and local governments proposed that a multi-use trail be established along the former route. Thus, the beloved Creeper Trail was born in 1987.
So whether you choose to tackle just a few miles of the trail or the entire route, you'll be immersed in Virginia's beautiful scenery and impressive history.
