Virginia Beach is undoubtedly one of the crown jewels of our state, yet it’s by no means the only beach that visitors enjoy. Plus, these destinations tend to be far less crowded than their oceanfront counterparts. Chesapeake Beach, aka Chick's Beach, is the local spot for Virginia Beach residents. The bayside waves you'll enjoy here are gentle and relatively calm compared to the nearby Atlantic coast. Plus, First Landing State Park is nearby, making this destination a perfect all-day spot for outdoor adventures.
Grandview Nature Preserve is a gem of a beach in the Hampton Roads Area. Strolling the shoreline, visitors will have the opportunity to admire beautiful birds and wildlife. Outlook Beach in Hampton might just be one of the area's best-kept secrets. It's located at Fort Monroe and features an expansive beach with lots of room to wander. During the summer months, there are typically lifeguards on duty. Visitors should note that dogs are not allowed on this beach from May 15th through September 15th. This white, sandy beach features brackish water (part salt, part fresh water). The waters of the York River and peaceful and calm, making swimming a relaxing and safe activity for the little ones. Not far from the beach, you'll find an ice cream shop as well as a few cafes to enjoy a quick bite.
