Located in Stowe, Gold Brook Bridge looks inconspicuous enough at first place. However, it’s actually the focus of one of Vermont’s most ghastly ghost stories.
There are almost as many versions of this tale as there are Vermonters, but they all center on a woman named Emily. Her tragic fate has given the spot its grisly reputation and the nickname "Emily’s Bridge."
One tale casts Emily as a young woman jilted at the altar. In a frenzy, she stole her family’s wagon and drove off to look for her groom only to plummet from the bridge into the rocky stream below.
Another version of the story has Emily hanging herself from the rafters of the bridge after her secret lover fails to meet her there in order to run away together.
The only recorded mention of Emily comes from a newspaper in 1968, where a local student reported channeling the spirit a woman named Emily. The spirit claimed to have been murdered on the bridge by her finance’s mother.
No matter the story, it’s undeniable that people have reported some truly creepy occurrences on the bridge over the years. Including ghostly screaming.
Many drivers and pedestrians claim that inconsolable screeching and sobbing can be heard near the bridge at night. Some have reported hearing the sound of a rope creaking or even seeing a ghostly apparition.
