This home in Woodland Utah is the brainchild of Jonathan “Earl” Stein. He approached architect Hank Lewis (Gigaplex Architects) to make it happen and the results are amazing. The home is called “Montesilo” — a twist on the name of Thomas Jefferson’s “Monticello.” Check out this tour!
Hank Lewis explains that a silo kit is very inexpensive - only around $5,000. Of course, it’s really intended to hold grain. Retrofitting it into a house can be rather tricky.
The kitchen cabinets had to be spaced a bit farther apart than normal to accommodate the curving wall, but otherwise, the kitchen functions just like any other.

Windows are a challenge - cut too much out, and you’ll threaten the structural integrity of the silo.

The house has some features that typical homes certainly lack. For instance, a hatch in the top of the silo allows for Earl’s telescope.
These little guest sleeping quarters were created for Earl’s future grandchildren. He calls them "bed in a box."
The home is cozy, and offers even better usage of the interior square footage than normal-shaped structures.
"Montesilo" was completed in 2006. It won an award from the American Institute of Architects.
