There is nothing quite like the charming small towns that dot Utah. While we can easily make lists featuring dozens of our favorite small towns to visit, there is one that is often overlooked but you could spend forever exploring — Coalville. Located in Summit County, this charming small town is home to outdoor opportunities, locally-owned shops, and so much more. While you could easily spend forever exploring and admiring all that this small town has to offer, we will settle for a weekend. That’s enough time to fall in love with this area.
Coalville sits along Interstate 80, not far from the Utah and Wyoming state line. Approximately 1,400 people call it home.
This town dates back to 1858 when individuals first began to settle in the area. The settlement was first known as Chalk Creek until coal was discovered and the name was changed to Coalville.
Today, when you visit this small town in Utah, you’ll notice its slower pace and historic roots. As you walk around town, you’ll notice historic storefronts and locally-owned businesses that you will want to step inside and explore.

The Summit Mercantile is one historic, family-owned store located on Main Street in Coalville. Established in 1908, this specialty grocery store has been serving residents in the same location for more than 110 years.
You can also spend the night under the stars at Echo State Park. The campground at this Utah state park offers up to 18 campsites with both electrical and water hookups. There is also a group campsite with five power and water sites.
This is a 28-mile trail designed for hiking, jogging, walking, horseback riding, and more. The trail will take you from Park City all the way to Echo Reservoir. It’s a great way to spend some time outdoors, explore the area, and maybe even see some wildlife along your way.
And when hunger strikes during your visit to Coalville, plan a visit to Denise’s Home Plate.
This small-town restaurant is not only where you will find delicious homemade meals, but the baked goods here are a must-try.

As you can see, if you only have a weekend to spend in Coalville, that’s plenty of time to fall in love with the area. It’s certainly one delightful place to be.
