The Food At This Utah Cafe Is So Good It’s A Crime Not To Try It
When was the last time you ate lunch at the Utah State Prison? Did you know that there’s a tasty little cafe right outside the chain link and razor wire? Take a look!
Serving Time Cafe opened in 2009. It's located right next to the prison and serves breakfast and lunch on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The address for the cafe is 14072 Pony Express Road. Look for signs along the frontage road.
The friendly women who prepare your food, clean the restaurant, and ring up your order are female inmates.
Some have earned culinary arts certificates from Davis Applied Technology College. The women who work here are able to gain experience — both in food service and in the basic skills necessary to maintain a job once their sentence is completed and they're reintroduced into the workforce.
This cafe isn't fancy — it's located inside a modular building, and the dining room is definitely no-frills, but it's clean and has plenty of seating.
When your cafe is at the state prison, you can make your own wall art with license plates made right on-site!
Just because this cafe is run by the prison doesn't mean the management doesn't have a sense of humor. The menu includes categories like "Felonies" and "Chain Gang Deli."
Breakfast is served all day.
The sandwiches are super tasty. Try the Philly cheesesteak with onion rings.
Serving Time Cafe has some of the best burgers in town. They're juicy and delicious. Get yours with tater tots on the side for a change of pace.
You don't want to leave without dessert. The available desserts change daily, but they're all homemade.
The cafe also sells fun memorabilia. Commemorate your visit, or pick up a prison apron to give as a gift.

Here’s another restaurant at a highly unlikely place —
this little pub is right in front of the oil refinery in Salt Lake City!
