If you’ve lived in Utah very long, you’ve certainly discovered the pastrami burger. It’s offered at many locally-owned burger joints, but one restaurant helped put it on the map. Take a look!
Crown Burger was founded by John & Rula Katzourakis and Rula's brother, Nick Katsanevas in 1978. Shown is the Millcreek location, at 3190 S. Highland Drive. There are currently seven Crown Burger locations in the Salt Lake valley and Layton.
In the 1980s, the owners hired Ken deCondé to design the interiors of four restaurants. The Highland Drive location still has its French and Belgian tapestries, massive stone fireplace and a massive cuckoo clock from Germany. The best pastrami burger in the world has a pretty swanky home.
While all of Crown Burgers' flame-broiled hamburgers are delicious, the signature burger is the Crown Burger. It includes a hamburger patty, lettuce, tomato onion, fry sauce, and a heaping portion of tender pastrami.
According to the New York Times, the pastrami burger was invented by a restaurant in California, but one of the Katsanevas brothers (who learned the recipe from a Turkish restaurant owner there) brought it to Utah with him.
