Antelope Canyon is one of the most famous slot canyons in the entire country. Located in Arizona, this slot canyon is beautiful and a destination that is on many outdoor enthusiasts’ bucket lists. However, what many people don’t know is there is a similar slot canyon in southern Utah with unique walls and fewer crowds — Zebra Canyon. With canyon walls that look like a zebra’s stripes and less distance to hike than the famed Antelope Canyon, this is one slot canyon in Utah that you need to explore.
Zebra Canyon is located in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. You will find the trailhead just south of Escalante on Hole-in-the-Rock Road.
It is recommended you download a map to the slot canyon as the trail can be difficult to follow. There are cairns to help you find your way and you will want to follow them closely.
This trail is also quite sandy so make sure to wear proper footwear and watch your step.
Once you reach the Zebra Slot Canyon, you are in for an adventure. This slot canyon doesn’t require any technical skills to navigate but it can be quite difficult to explore. Quite often, there is standing water throughout the canyon — sometimes several feet deep. Be prepared to wade (or even swim at times) throughout this Utah slot canyon.
The water can be especially high during the spring and it can be quite cold as well. Make sure you bring extra clothing, shoes, and even a towel on this hike.
Similar to Antelope Canyon, you will travel through colorful canyon walls that create the most incredible views. The unique stripes look like a zebra – hence the name of this slot canyon in Utah.
There will be areas where the canyon is quite wide and others where you will have very little space to trek. If you have a fear of tight spaces, this slot canyon may not be for you.
As always when venturing through a slot canyon, be smart before you even begin your adventure. Always check the weather before exploring a slot canyon and never enter a slot canyon if there is a chance of a thunderstorm or rain. Always take someone along with you and let others know where you are going.
Zebra Canyon isn’t very long but it is unforgettable. While this may not be the popular Antelope Canyon, it’s one Utah slot canyon that is also going to provide an unforgettable experience.
