Stopping for a gas on a road trip usually isn’t anything special; it’s just a place to fuel up and maybe grab a soda and a snack. When you visit this little gas station in Hanksville, you definitely want to get out and go inside the little store!

Hanksville is a tiny town of around 200 people. It's located between Capitol Reef National Park and Canyonlands National Park.

It's one of the last stops for travelers heading to Bullfrog.
If you find yourself out in that neck of the woods, you might need to fuel up. The Sinclair gas station is conveniently located at the intersection of state highways 24 and 95.

In 1984, Harry Thompson bought the lot for the mere sum of $1,200. He planned to build a gas station there, but he had one problem: most of the 4.5 acre-lot was covered by a small mountain. Harry began blasting away at the mountain, clearing space for his pumps. Then he decided to just leave the rest of the mountain where it was, hollow it out and put his convenience store inside. Two months and a bunch of dynamite later, he had a store. Some of the walls inside are still bare rock.
Over time, the store was expanded, eventually including restrooms.

Inside, you'll find the typical gas station convenience store items: cold drinks, bottled water, an ATM machine and snacks of all kinds.
As if a convenience store inside a rock wasn't enough to get people talking, you'll also find three velociraptors hanging out.

Because at some point, the owner said to himself, "This is great...but it still needs something. I know...velociraptors!" We have to admit that they definitely add some charm.
