Utah is home to many small towns with rich histories. Scofield is one of these towns, but many Utahns don’t even know it exists. Located in central Utah, this small town was once a booming mining town but today, it is barely known.

Scofield is located on the Wasatch Plateau in Carbon County. It was once the most popular town in the entire county but today, it is a small town with just over 20 people calling it home.

In 1875, coal was discovered in the area, creating quite a mining boom. A mine was opened in the nearby canyon and to help get the coal out of the area, a narrow-gauge railroad was built into the town.

Unfortunately, in May 1900, a mine explosion occurred. Approximately 100 men were killed in the explosion and nearly 100 more from the poisonous afterdamp. Weeks later, the mine was reopened but production significantly diminished due to the lack of experienced miners and other factors. Eventually, several mines in the area began to close down, resulting in numerous residents moving away.
Today, when you visit Scofield, there is not much left to see or do. However, many people who venture to the area are on their way to Scofield State Park.

This state park is a terrific destination regardless of the time of year. During the summer you can boat and fish, and in the winter, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing are just a few activities that will keep you busy.

You may have never heard of the small town of Scofield or you passed through it in a blink of an eye. However, its mining history has played an important part in Utah's story and this small town and state park are areas you should visit at least once.
