Southern Utah summers mean endless days of triple-digit temperatures, but that doesn’t have to hold you back from exploring some of the natural wonders found here. On a hot afternoon, what you need is a trail with a waterfall payoff at its end. Lower Calf Creek Falls is just the ticket, and it even offers a nice, chilly pool for wading and swimming.
The Calf Creek Recreation Area is located between the towns of Escalante and Boulder, and it's managed by the Bureau of Land Management. You'll find a day-use area and a small campground here.
To reach the lower falls, start at the well-marked trailhead. You'll want to make sure to bring plenty of water along. Though this hike doesn't have much elevation gain, it can still be fairly strenuous, and summer temperatures can easily reach 100 degrees or more.
...but what makes this hike tricky is the deep sand you'll find covering the trail in a few places. Distract yourself from the slog by watching the cliffs above - you'll see some pictographs and an old granary along the way. You might also get a look at a mule deer or two, or see a beaver swimming gracefully through the creek.
Make sure to practice the principles of Leave No Trace when you visit. It's important to stay on the designated trail, pack out everything you pack in, and be aware of other visitors around you. Let's keep this place just as beautiful as we found it!
