*UPDATE* Unfortunately, Big Ed’s closed for good the week of September 11th, 2017. The owners didn’t leave an explanation, just a sign on the door. We’ll miss them!
The Beehive State has its share of fancy restaurants with beautifully-manicured grounds and gourmet food…but some of the tastiest fare you’ll find is at the little hole-in-the-wall diners here. One of the best kept secrets (unless you’re a U of U student), is Big Ed’s Diner. It’s a tiny, no-frills place …and the food is sooo good.
Big Ed's is located at 210 S. University Street, right across the street from President's Circle. U of U students have long known that this is the place to go for good food and friendly service.
If you're looking for a classy, upscale dining experience for brunch, this is not it. Nope, this is good food, in a very casual setting, ideally with a beer.
The Lins (owner Linda Lin and her son Stephen Lin, who manages the place) serve up some delicious comfort food all day long. The big, steaming bowls of noodles are fabulous (get them with beef, spicy vegetables, chicken.
But the signature breakfast special is the "Gawd Awful." It consists of hashbrowns, two eggs, chili, cheese, onions and sour cream. It looks kind of awful...but it's absolutely delicious. And...it's only $5.25 for a half order; $7.45 for a full.
Grab a couple friends, order a few Gawd Awfuls, add in a side of potstickers, a couple orders of fries and a few beers...and you have the most perfectly awful, fabulous brunch.
