There’s been a lot of talk about Utah’s new State Prison, which is slated for completion in 2020, with inmates packing their bags and moving from the point of the mountain to the new facility in 2021. Amidst all the controversy about the new prison, many Utahns don’t realize that Utah closed a correctional facility in 2017 – and now the property sits vacant. Check it out:
Daggett County is located the northeast corner of the Beehive State, right near the Utah/Wyoming border, close to Flaming Gorge Reservoir. It's remote, and also claims the distinction of being Utah's least-populated county, with a population of just about 1,000 people.
In 2017, the population got even a little smaller as 80 inmates were moved from the Daggett County Jail after allegations of abuse and torture. The cases brought by several inmates are ongoing, but since 2017, the jail has sat vacant. It was recently placed on the market for a cool $4.45 million.
If you're in the market for a jail (or have a good imagination and can picture another use for this 17,680-square-foot building sitting on 11 acres, this might be just what you're looking for.
This facility was built in 1998 and comes with all kinds of amenities. You'll find plenty of industrial charm throughout, with solid, cinderblock wall construction and bright, fluorescent fixtures that keep the space light and bright 24 hours a day.
If your friends aren't available to hang out and watch television or lift weights with you, perhaps you can still enjoy a phone conversation. You'll enjoy face-to-face interaction, while also avoiding awkward hugs or sloppy kisses from relatives you don't like that much anyway.
Cozy sleeping accommodations include bunk beds so you can enjoy sleepovers with your 11 closest pals. All rooms include easy-to-clean surfaces, and readily-accessible restrooms. There's a communal vibe here that you just can't escape.
The Daggett County Jail might be a remote destination, but you'll still enjoy plenty of hot water and gas for cooking thanks to the huge propane tank on the grounds. Just remember to take your smoke break on the other side of the property to avoid potential explosions.
In addition to its grand front entrance, this property features a few other exits, though you should be aware that security cameras monitor these doors. Of course, this remote property is situated far from shopping malls, movie theaters, and five-star restaurants, so new owners should be prepared to enjoy an isolated existence.
