The lake is famous for its striking blue waters and glassy surface. In fact, it’s actually a volcanic caldera that was created by the eruption of Mount Mazama.

Black Elk Peak, South Dakota
Black Elk Peak (also known as Harney Peak) is the highest spot in South Dakota. Unsurprisingly, this means the views from this place are absolutely unreal. It’s located in the Black Elk Wilderness Area in the Black Hills National Forest. Hiking to the top will take you over about seven miles of terrain and can be a strenuous journey, but the payoff is well worth it. The summit is also home to an old stone tower.
