There’s A Little Slice Of Heaven Right Here In Iowa And You’ll Want To Visit

Iowa is full of history, and it’s easy to see the evidence of our past in many of the state’s small towns. One group of towns has captured the hearts of Iowans and Midwesterners, and is a little slice of heaven right here in the Hawkeye State. The Amana Colonies, located half an hour from both Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, are some of the most charming towns you’ll ever visit.

The Amana Colonies are made up of seven villages: Amana (or Main Amana), East Amana, High Amana, Middle Amana, South Amana, West Amana, and Homestead.

Main Amana is located along Mill Race, which originates at the Iowa River.

The earliest settlers in the town were German Pietists, who had come to America to escape persecution in their home country.

In 1861, the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad built a station in nearby Homestead. Recognizing the need for a rail connection, the Amana community purchased the entire town.

Now, all seven villages have a population of around 1,200 residents, and the Amana Colonies are a popular cultural destination.

Landmarks in the town include Woolen Mills, which has been selling handspun cotton and wool products since 1855.

Ackerman Winery is the oldest winery in the state of Iowa. It was founded in 1956 and is still open today for tastings and tours.

One of Iowa's most iconic restaurants is located in the Amana Colonies. The Ox Yoke Inn has been serving residents and visitors since 1940.

This country restaurant serves up perfect Midwestern meals, family style. You can try local German cuisine or pig out on their famous fried chicken.

In all seven villages, you'll find quaint shops selling homemade decorations, gifts and other items handcrafted by local artisans.

The best time to visit the Amana Colonies is during one of their iconic festivals. There’s Maifest in May, the Wurst Festival in June, Oktoberfest in October, Prelude to Christmas in November and December, and Winterfest in January. Find their schedule of events right here!
