Main streets, or downtown areas, have traditionally been where the heart of a town is. The majority of the restaurants, shops, government buildings, music and art venues and other vital parts of a town are located there. That isn't always true these days, but main streets in several towns have made a comeback in recent years. Here are some adorable main streets in West Virginia that you should check out.
1. Shepherdstown
Cute restaurants like the Bistro 112, along with shops like the Now and Then Shop can be found on German Street, the main drag in Shepherdstown.
2. Thomas
East Avenue is the main street in Thomas, a small town in Tucker County with a lot going on. There’s a great music venue (the Purple Fiddle), a general store ( Colabrese Old General Store), an art gallery, and more.
3. Lewisburg
Lewisburg was called one of the Coolest Small Towns in the country, and looking at the town’s main streets, it’s not hard to figure out why. This town has unique specialty shops, dining and art galleries.
4. Buckhannon
Buckhannon, the county seat of Upshur County, has a colorful mainstreet area. There’s a flower shop, clothing boutique and an outdoors store right on Main Street. There are also restaurants to keep you fueled up as you explore.
5. Charles Town
There’s a lot of history in the downtown area of Charles Town, which was founded by George Washington’s brother, Charles. The courthouse there is historic, as it served as the trial location for John Brown after his raid on Harpers Ferry.
6. Martinsburg
Martinsburg is known as the fastest growing city in the state, so there's plenty going on in its downtown. There are antique shops and cool restaurants.
7. South Charleston
South Charleston really lives up to its motto "Someplace Special." From the famous Indian mound that sits across from it, you can see its plethora of great restaurants and shops. (It doesn’t always have this many people, though; this was taken at an event in Summer 2012.)
8. Fayetteville
Fayetteville is a big tourist spot for its outdoors activities — hiking, rafting and zip lining, for instance. But its downtown area is fun too. There are great outdoors and bike shops, unique restaurants like Cathedral Cafe, and a historic theatre.
9. Wheeling
Wheeling’s Centre Market Square has a fish market and a coffee shop, among other shops and restaurants.
