Vermont has always embraced winter with open arms. We love the way the landscape looks covered in a blanket of white. And we seize every opportunity to ski, snowshoe, skate, and snowmobile. But we also enjoy snuggling up in front of a crackling fire when the day is done. While we've already released our list of Christmas towns this year, here are eight of the coziest towns in Vermont that are just begging for a visit.
1. Dorset
Dorset has a foot firmly set in its quarrying past and you'll want to check it out while you're here. The small shops are a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of larger areas. This town also has an annual gingerbread contest. What could be sweeter than that?
2. Waitsfield
You'll get a town full of charm in Waitsfield. While many come for the skiing, others know that the restaurant scene is a delicious surprise. Add a quaint covered bridge into the mix and you have a postcard-perfect town.
3. Putney
This laid-back town with picturesque a brook flowing through the center is a delightful place to relax. A visit to the general store will take you back in time to the meandering good old days.
4. Bristol
This festival loving town thrives on holidays and celebrations. Bristol is a friendly spot for a getaway especially for those who adore charming downtown areas.
5. Craftsbury
Rolling hills with vibrant red barns standing out against the snow is the scenery you'll find in Craftsbury. Enjoy cross-country skiing or snowmobiling during the winter in this town that is full of American pride.
6. Brandon
Stroll through the walkable vibrant center of Brandon that is brimming with shops, galleries, and restaurants. This artsy town has an unhurried and welcoming vibe that is conducive to recharging your soul.
7. Burke
Tucked away in the Northeast Kingdom, Burke is comprised of three distinct villages. Outdoor recreation is plentiful on fresh snow at Burke Mountain Resort while cozy inns are warm and inviting for your downtime.
8. Lincoln
Located at the base of Mount Abraham, Lincoln is one of those quiet yet beautiful places that takes your breath away. This residential community is a great spot to slow things down with a visit to the general store and local producers of maple syrup.
