The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated more than 700 unique destinations across the globe as World Heritage Sites. These landmarks are legally protected and recognized for having cultural, historical, scientific, or natural significance. From ancient ruins and historic cities to deserts, forests, mountains, and more, UNESCO World Heritage Sites are truly remarkable.

In the United States, 25 awe-inspiring destinations have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and we truly believe each one has a spot on our bucket list. From Alaska and Hawaii to North Carolina and Tennessee, we will be sharing all 25 of these sites: both natural and cultural sites. These incredible destinations protected by UNESCO are worth adding to your bucket list – I know I'm personally adding all of the sites I haven't experienced yet to my travel wish list, starting with Jefferson's Monticello since it's just three hours from my current residence and I've never been.
Natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites
1. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Containing half of all the world’s known geothermal features — with more than 10,000 examples — Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park is also home to the world’s largest concentration of geysers. Yellowstone’s ecological communities provide unparalleled opportunities for conservation, enjoyment, and wildlife viewing of grizzlies, wolves, bison, and wapitis.
2. Everglades National Park, Florida
At the southern tip of Florida, Everglades National Park is home to a variety of water habitats forming a sanctuary for a variety of bird and reptile species as well as threatened species like the manatee. It is the largest designated sub-tropical wilderness reserve in North America and contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere, the most significant breeding ground of wading birds, and the largest continuous stand of sawgrass prairie in North America.
3. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
Carved by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is one of the world’s most spectacular gorges. The mile-deep gorge ranges in width from .3 to 18.6 miles, twisting and turning 276 miles formed during six million years of geological activity and erosion by the Colorado River. Within, you’ll discover buttes, spires, mesas, and temples, with horizontal strata that retrace geological history over the last two billion years, representing the four major geologic eras.
The first time I saw the Grand Canyon, I was in awe – and our readers agreed. When asked about their favorite natural wonder in the United States, 32 percent of OnlyInYourState readers overwhelmingly voted for the Grand Canyon.

4. Kluane, Wrangell-St. Elias, Glacier Bay & Tatshenshini-Alsek, Alaska

Here, you will find examples of some of the world’s longest and most spectacular glaciers, as well as grizzly bears, caribou, and Dall’s sheep. With Icefields, glaciers, and towering mountains, this region has high biodiversity, with flora and fauna communities ranging from marine, coastal forest, montane, sub-alpine, and alpine tundra.
5. Redwood National and State Parks, California
Bordering the Pacific Ocean north of San Francisco, Redwood National Park is covered in a magnificent forest of coast redwood trees, the tallest and most impressive trees in the world. A surviving remnant of a forest that has existed for 160 million years, this National Park is home to rich intertidal, marine, and freshwater stream flora and fauna in two distinct physiographic environments of coastline and coastal mountains. Notable species standouts are the sea lion, bald eagle, and the endangered California brown pelican.
6. Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky
The world’s largest network of natural caves and underground passageways, Mammoth Cave is home to limestone formations galore. With more than 285 miles of surveyed cave passageways within the property and another 80 miles outside the property, you will discover nearly every type of known cave formation within the site. 8. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee and North Carolina
Home to more than 3,500 plant species — including nearly as many trees as in all of Europe — Great Smoky Mountains National Park stretches more than 500,000 acres of North Carolina and Tennessee. It is characterized by its scenic vistas of mist-shrouded, or smoky, mountains, verdant forests, and crystal-clear streams.
As a self-proclaimed mountain lover, there is something incredibly special about the Smoky Mountains – the hazy foothills of Tennessee and North Carolina made me feel at home, perhaps for the first time in my adult life.
9. Yosemite National Park, California
Nestled in the heart of California, Yosemite National Park is home to verdant valleys, soaring cliffs, cascading waterfalls, polished domes, cirque lakes, and towering mountains. This pristine example of glacial erosion of granite bedrock has created geologic features that are unique in the world. Views of Yosemite Valley, a half-mile-deep glacial-carved cleft with sheer granite walls, are particularly stunning.
10. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii
The site of two of the most active volcanoes in the world — Mauna Kea and Kilauea — Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is ever-evolving, with lava flows revealing geological formations and stark, stunning landscapes. Located on Hawaii Island, the park is also home to rare birds and endemic species and forests full of giant ferns, steam vents, and more.
From hiking through the Kilauea Iki crater to driving the Chain of Craters road and watching lava flow into the sea, my trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is one I will never forget. Kilauea is a powerful reminder that while the earth is changing all around us, we should take a moment to soak it all in, for if we don’t, we might never get the chance again.
11. Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico
In southern New Mexico, Carlsbad Cavern National Park is home to more than 120 limestone caves that are world-renowned for their size, mode of origin, and diversity of decorative rock formations. Comprised of Glacier National Park in Montana and Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the world’s first international peace park. 13. Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, Hawaii
A vast and isolated cluster of small, low-lying islands and atolls roughly 150 miles northwest of the main Hawaiian Islands, Papahānaumokuākea is a place of natural and cultural significance. One of the largest marine protected areas in the world, this remote ecosystem is home to extensive coral reefs and lagoons and archaeological remains related to pre-European settlement on the islands of Nihoa and Makumanamana.
While I haven't been to Papahānaumokuākea, the coral reefs surrounding the Hawaiian Islands – and the wildlife that lives within – is truly spectacular. I lived in Hawaii for seven years and spent as much time as possible in and near the waters of the Pacific Ocean, swimming with sea turtles, tropical fish, dolphins, and more.
Cultural UNESCO World Heritage Sites
1. Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado
Built from the 6th to 12th century, more than 4,400 sites have been recorded in southwest Colorado on the Mesa Verde plateau. 2. Independence Hall, Pennsylvania
In the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Independence Hall is a shining symbol of freedom and democracy. It is where both the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Constitution of the United States (1787) were signed. These documents are often considered to have signaled the modern era of government. The building is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Park site and is a piece of American history worth experiencing for yourself.
Be sure to reserve free tickets online (just pay a $1 processing fee) to go inside Independence Hall before you visit. I didn't know about this before I visited in 2022, but I did enjoy strolling around the exterior of Independence Hall. Seeing the Liberty Bell in person was also quite spectacular.
3. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, Illinois
The largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site was occupied primarily during the Mississippian period (800-1400) and is a striking example of a complex chiefdom society. At its peak, the population was 10-20,000, and it is home to some 120 mounds, including the largest prehistoric earthwork in the Americas, Monks Mound.
The Cahokia Interpretive Center Exhibits and Gallery remain closed for most of 2024 for major mechanical renovations.
4. La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site, Puerto Rico
Built between the 16th and 20th centuries to protect the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico, La Fortaleza has served as an arsenal, a prison, a fortress, and a residence of the Governor-General, serving today as the seat and residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico. Italian Renaissance, Baroque, and French Enlightenment architecture combine to represent a fine display of European military architecture adopted by the American continent.

5. Statue of Liberty, New York
Perhaps no landmark in the United States is more iconic than the Statue of Liberty. Made in Paris by the French sculptor Bartholdi in collaboration with Gustave Eiffel, this breathtaking sculpture was gifted by France on the centenary of American independence. Standing guard at the entrance to New York Harbour, the Statue of Liberty was inaugurated has welcomed millions of immigrants to the United States ever since.
Visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is indeed a once in a lifetime opportunity and should truly be checked off everyone’s U.S. Bucket List in their lifetime – whether your family immigrated through Ellis Island or you simply enjoy history, architecture, or stunning views. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit in February 2022 and learned a lot.
6. Chaco Culture, New Mexico
A network of archaeological sites preserving outstanding elements of a pre-Columbian cultural complex in New Mexico, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was a focus for ceremonials, political, and trade activity for the Four Corners area. Comprised of Chaco Culture National Historical Park, Aztec Ruins National Monument, and five protected archaeological sites, Chaco is known for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings — including an ancient urban ceremonial centre unlike anything else constructed before or since.
7. Monticello and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia
Did you know that Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States, was also a talented architect? He designed Monticello, his plantation home, and his dream academic village, which is still the heart of the University of Virginia in Charlotteville. The Neoclassicism-inspired buildings have drawn international attention since they were built in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
8. Taos Pueblo, New Mexico
Located in the valley of a Rio Grande tributary, Taos Pueblo represents the culture of Pueblo Indians of Arizona and New Mexico. Home to ceremonial buildings and facilities, multi-story adobe buildings built in terraced tiers, this is just one of several settlements established in the valleys of the Rio Grande that have survived to the present day. Situated along the San Antonio River Basin in southern Texas, the San Jose Mission is home to architectural and archaeological structures, farmlands, churches and granaries, residencies, and water distribution systems. 11. The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright
From Fallingwater in Pennsylvania to the Guggenheim Museum in New York, eight buildings of iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright are listed collectively as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These buildings exemplify the organic architecture developed by Wright, featuring an open floor plan and the blurring of boundaries between indoor and outdoor space. Each building is innovative and has had a strong impact on Europe and America’s modern architecture.
12. Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, Ohio
Built between 2,000 and 1,600 years ago along the Ohio River tributaries, the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks are the most representative surviving example of the traditions of the Hopewell culture. Aligned with the cycles of the sun and the moon, the scale and complexity of these earthworks served as ceremonial centers, yielding finely crafted ritual objects from exotic raw materials. Senior Editor Sarah McCosham visited the Hopewell Earthworks with her kids in 2023 and found herself unexpectedly moved by the beauty and history of this site. While the frequent flyer in your life will always appreciate discovering a stocking full of gums and mints to throw in their carry-on, here are a few other gifts under $20:
Luggage Tags: These luggage tags from Etsy come in more than 20 acrylic colors and are fully customizable with your name and address. We love a personalized gift for digital nomads – especially when it comes from a small business!
Luggage Scale: Know someone who struggles with overpacking? This luggage scaleis less than $10 at the time of publication and helps you maximize your luggage weight.
Staff Pick: Only In Your State Social Media Coordinator Madison Silveira swears by these packing cubes that were listed at $19.99 at the time of publication: "As a chronic over-packer who prepares for all situations, these packing cubes are a lifesaver and a great way to save space and plan ahead!"
If you're the type whose wanderlust leads to the world's most exotic locales, who likes to travel in style, and who appreciates high-thread-count sheets and bespoke concierge services, the following luxury travel gifts for her and luxury travel gifts for him are sure to please – and just might inspire you to book your next trip!
Accommodations For The Luxury Traveler
For many travelers, the accommodations are just as important as the locale. Staying at a high-end boutique hotel or beautiful resort can take a regular vacation and turn it into a memorable getaway. This is certainly the experience offered through Kimpton, a line of luxury hotels and restaurants across the world that our Manager of Editorial loves splurging on when she can! This is one gift card for travelers we can't recommend enough!
Jet lag, airports, car trips... travel can often feel anything but relaxing! Make sure you arrive at your destination feeling fresh and rested with these luxury travel gifts for her:
Eye Masks: Puffy eyes aren't anybody's favorite look, and these Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Eye Masks are a cult favorite that feels like a mini spa treatment!
Coop Travel Pillow: If, like Editor Sarah McCosham, you simply *must* bring your own pillow on vacation, make it the best pillow, which, according to Sarah, is the Coop Original Travel Pillow. Stuffed with firm memory foam and microfiber fill, it can compress to half its size, and, as a bonus: it's the perfect camp pillow! Because camping should be luxurious, too.
Travel-Size Hydration Packs: Hydration is key when you're traveling, and if you're looking to upgrade your H2O with something a bit more fun, the Liquid I.V. Hydration Mocktails do just that! Cheers!
Budget Pick: The Smooth + FAB Travel Size Duo packs a big punch in a tiny (TSA) friendly package. An exfoliating body scrub and rich moisturizer are a cure-all for dry, stressed-out skin. This duo was $20 at Sephora at the time of publication.
Luxury Accommodations... 24/7/365!
If you love hotel sheets as much as we do, stock up on your favorites at Marriott Bonvoy. From plush robes and crisp sheets to portable diffusers (shown above) that smell like your favorite Westin Resort, this is the perfect way to treat yourself at home.
Luxury Stocking Stuffers: Whether you're on a plane or sleeping in the passenger seat, you're all but guaranteed restorative shut-eye with a Silk Eye Mask. Wearing an eye mask not only promotes deeper sleep, but silk fiber is great for the skin, hypo-allergenic, and naturally thermoregulating. We also love the products from Quince; they feel like butter on the skin! And in terms of skincare, the Chakra™ 3 Mist from Aveda will put you in the "vacation" mindset with just one spray!
